Papers of J. Earl Leverich, a former Wisconsin legislator elected as both a Progressive and as a Republican (1935-1939 and 1943-1967) who was best known for his opposition to the manufacture and sale of oleomargarine in Wisconsin. Also included are papers of his father, James W. Leverich, a prominent fruit farmer and leading figure in the cooperative movement in western Wisconsin. The legislative papers, 1935-1939 and 1943-1967, consist of constituent correspondence and subject files, and they document dairy and agricultural issues, highway construction, aviation, Camp McCoy, education, taxation, and conservation. Correspondence, campaign literature, and financial reports document all of his electoral campaigns. Additional papers document his career as chairman of the Town of Angelo, his interest in aviation, management of the family farm, leadership in the 1931 demonstration that resulted in the passage of strong anti-oleomargarine legislation, membership in Governor Schmedeman's 1933 Dairy Committee, and management of the Sparta Cooperative Creamery. The elder Leverich's papers include some personal correspondence and additional papers concerning the Town of Angelo and the management of the family farm. There are also financial records of the Sparta Fruit Growers Association and the Sparta Produce Exchange. The photographs primarily document Leverich's inspection of the Petenwell Dam as part of a legislative committee in 1949.
