William P. Young graduated from the
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine in 1941 and became a Professor of Surgery at
UW-Madison. He was a leader in the field of cardiac surgery, performing a brief off-pump
open heart surgery assisted by hypothermia and vena caval ligation in the early 1950s.
Young's collection consists of correspondence from patients expressing gratitude, which
appears in letters as well as in scrapbooks. It also includes photographs that were used for
teaching, writings by Young and others, and a pair of telephoto lens glasses that he made
for performing surgeries. English
