Audio cassette recordings of interviews with twelve former
Milwaukee Public School administrators, teachers and seven former students, conducted as
part of a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) History Department research project
examining the decline of Milwaukee public schools. The interviews provide information on
various perspectives of changes, dating from the 1920s through the 1980s, on the
administration of the schools; modernization of the curriculum; the Milwaukee Teachers'
Education Association; student attitudes, discipline, and social life; parental involvement;
race relations, especially for African American teachers; and public support for education.
The collection also contains written abstracts of the interviews, but no verbatim
transcriptions were written. Copies are available for most of interviews.
