A 1939-1940 leaflet of history and information about Jewish Congregation Anshe Pele Zedek in Manitowoc, Wisconsin features a cover photograph of the congregation’s building at 1221 South Thirteenth Street, which was erected in 1925 and used until 1953. At the outbreak of World War II there were about fifty Jewish families in Manitowoc and nearby Two Rivers. A Manitowoc Coordinating Committee (MCC) was formed on October 29, 1938 to aid Jewish refugees emigrating from Nazi Germany. The local group was part of the Wisconsin Coordinating Committee (WCC), which in turn worked with the National Coordinating Committee for Aid to Refugees and Emigrants Coming from Germany (NCC). The Manitowoc Committee, chaired by Dr. Nathan Schneck, signed affidavits, assisted in the immigration process, and raised funds for the support of particular immigrants and of the WCC. They helped to re-settle seven individuals and families; two of the families stayed in the Manitowoc area. The MCC functioned until 1941 when it probably combined with a regional organization headquartered in Chicago. This leaflet is fashioned from a 9”x 15” sheet of heavy stock glossy paper, printed on both sides and folded to form eight panels.
