The program for 1944 graduation exercises at Lincoln High School in Manitowoc, Wisconsin reflects the World War II context of a ceremony that featured patriotic elements including “A Tribute to the Fighting Men of ‘44” and “A Flag Day Address.” In the list of graduating seniors, forty-six names were preceded by a small “s” for “In Service,” indicating that the student had already entered the armed forces. A few returned to receive their diplomas, but in most cases the diplomas were presented to mothers or other family members. (An article published in the local newspaper after the war reported that Lincoln issued a total of 136 such “wartime diplomas” during the years 1942 through 1946.) This printed program is fashioned from two double-sided 8”x 10½” sheets folded to form an eight-page booklet, including front and back covers. The back cover, not shown here, is blank.
