00:00:00 - Art Code continues to discuss the growth of the astronomy department under his chairmanship. He talks about his relationship with the deans of L&S. AC chaired the department for twelve years. The department was a source of income because the overhead of its grants was larger than its budget. 00:02:39 - He discusses the space program project. He talks about the properties of construction materials they considered, including wood. 00:08:18 - NASA proposed an orbiting astronomical observatory (OAO) series. Grant to design a photometer. He talks about setting up the Space Astronomy Laboratory. 00:10:43 - Because of the limited space available in Washburn Observatory, a wing of Sterling Hall had been offered to the astronomy department. 00:13:23 - The department also rented part of a house on Johnson Street to house temporarily the Space Astronomy Laboratory. Later the Lab was moved to a building on Park Street. He describes the research facilities there. 00:19:44 - NASA funded the department to work on the instrumentation for a large photometer. AC talks about the development of this photometer and the department’s working relationship with NASA. 00:30:00 - AC discusses the relationship between the Space Astronomy Laboratory and the astronomy department. 00:31:27 - Art Code continues to discuss the relationship between the Space Astronomy Laboratory and the astronomy department. AC made the Lab a separate entity beholden to the department. 00:36:16 - He talks about the bombing of Sterling Hall and the subsequent move of the Lab to Chamberlin Hall. 00:38:44 - Suomi in meteorology and AC in astronomy were the biggest recipients of NASA funding at UW. They put in a proposal for funding the Space Science and Engineering Center. The astronomy department augmented its reputation during these years. 00:41:44 - The department applied for NSF funding for a project with the University of Washington to develop a new telescope and another project with UC-Santa Cruz. 00:45:16 - Albert Whitford headed a proposal for a national observatory in Yuma, Arizona. This evolved into a consortium of universities, called the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA), including Harvard, Berkeley, Ohio State, Michigan, Indiana, Chicago, and Wisconsin. 00:51:54 - AC talks about the AURA site survey, which settled on a site near Tucson, Arizona. 00:57:02 - AURA also set up an observatory in the Andes. AC talks about some European telescopes in South America. 01:00:07 - He describes the National Optical Astronomical Observatories (NOAO) and the numerous strong telescopes throughout the US.
